Earl Mowatt, Graphic Designer
When Massey Communications’ Graphic Designer Earl Mowatt joined some fellow students at a study session for the GRE more than two years ago, he never expected he’d meet someone who would eventually change his life. At that study session, a class presenter took the opportunity to share with classmates her passion for mentoring, which sparked an interest in Earl.
A few weeks later, Earl was signed up as a mentor in the U.S. Dream Academy mentoring program, a community outreach program designed to mentor disadvantaged students whose mothers, fathers, or both are incarcerated. In an attempt to break the cycle, mentors with the U.S. Dream Academy meet with students in an after school setting once or twice weekly to talk about goals, aspirations, challenges and academics.
Earl and Noudjeko were introduced two years ago, and the two have been meeting at least once weekly since then. They have a few important interests in common, including a love for playing the trumpet and the ability to speak French Creole to one another.
Noudjeko, who is now 14 years old, wants to be a doctor when he grows up. He revels in the fact that Earl, a perpetual student who is pursuing his PhD at the University of Central Florida, will likely be a classmate when he enters the university to chase his dream of becoming a doctor in a few years.
Although Noudjeko officially graduates from the program at the end the summer, Earl thinks that the two will continue to build upon their relationship. Just last weekend, Earl was honored with the ‘Patient Mentor Award’ at the U.S. Dream Academy’s annual recognition luncheon.
“It has been an honor and a pleasure watching Noudjeko grow and develop during our two years in this program together,” commented Earl. “I know he’s going on to do great things in this world.”
Massey Communications congratulates Earl on earning this award! Earl, we’re proud of you for many reasons, not the least of which is your dedication to area youth. Thanks for being such a valued part of our team!
