Several of my friends and co-workers have welcomed little ones into the world and their life over the last few months with names like Connor, Charlie and Harrison. A man in Egypt, however, has welcomed his little one with the name “Facebook.” You heard me right, Facebook.
According to sources, the young father was grateful for the recent uprising in Egypt and subsequent oust of longtime president Hosni Mubarak. His thanks were expressed in a most unusual way; by naming his firstborn girl “Facebook” Jamal Ibrahim. This uprising was largely driven by social media and Facebook was no exception.
We are no strangers to unique names in the United States – from Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Apple” to Christie Brinkley’s “Sailor” to Eddie Murphy’s “Zola”- it seems everything has been thought of from A to Z. Apparently, this young Egyptian man has given Mark Zuckerberg the ultimate tip of the hat and named his child after the most visited website in the world. As a person with an unusual name myself, it is no surprise the lengths people might go to in order to be unique. With this naming though, this little girl’s life will literally be marked with history.
My only question, why not Twitter? At least when his daughter began to talk, he could have said she had spoken her first “tweet.”
