The news as of lately, has overshadowed probably one of the worse natural disasters in recent history. While the news informed me of what happened in Tuscaloosa, Social Media really brought it home for me! After going to the University of Alabama and having so many people I know that went there and are from Alabama, my heart just sinks every time I hear or think about the recent tornadoes.
As an Alabama alum, I am so proud to see and hear of the many people who have stopped what they are doing to take much needed items to those devastated areas. Through Facebook and Twitter, I have learned about all the areas affected and have found ways to help that would go directly to these areas. Social media has been one of the best ways to get the information I needed, quickly.
Thanks to the many Facebook pages about the tornadoes, I found several different websites that will let you make donations to help the areas:
Thank you to Charlie Sheen who recently visited the area and is offering his celebrity status to help the “Torpedos Against Tornadoes” campaign.
You can donate through your cell phone. Text REDCROSS to 90999 and a $10 donation will be made to the American Red Cross. If you have PayPal, this is another great way to donate that is not too expensive.
I don’t know about you, but I would also like to give more than money – well you can!
Bama Orlando is hosting an event this Saturday, May 7 at JB’s Sportsbar on Kirkman Road beginning at 6PM. Come have some dinner and watch the “Nick Saban Game Changer” on the big screens, maybe even the 2009 Championship game!
Here is a list of items that are needed and will be taken at the event:
PowerBars, pouches of diced chicken breast, Welch’s Fruit Snacks, hard candy, sugar-free gum, Snak Club Oriental Mix (part of the carbohydrates that comes from green peas and rice), WATER, GATORADE/POWERADE, other foods like cereal bars, glucose tablets, pouches of tuna, salted and unsalted nuts and seeds, pet food and leashes, toys and books for children, personal care items, gloves for picking up debris, diapers and baby wipes, aspirin, first aid kits, combs, brushes, toilet paper and soap.
I will do my best to be there on Saturday, even if only to donate some items and see everyone. Please do not make it just Alabama alum event, we need everyone that can help! Can you?
